A new inventory management system to improve understanding of stock, consumption levels and to provide visibility across the supply chain in NHS Scotland has now been rolled out to 14 health boards.

Inventory Management Solution (IMS) is a key element of the Scan for Safety programme and the rollout which will ultimately cover 15 health boards will also deliver improvements in patient care through the traceability of medical devices and equipment.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted challenges with stock management and visibility of the supply chain and funding was secured from Scottish Government Health Finance Directorate in 2021 to support improved inventory management across NHS Scotland.

This allowed the rollout of Genesis Inventory Management, Point of Care and Analytics modules and work commenced in NHS Orkney in September 2021.

Genesis Inventory Management is now being implemented in its 14th* health board with work underway in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

This brings the total number of sites to 38 with 1,605 departments generating orders via Genesis.

The total order value raised since September 2021 is £76.3 million with £12.9 million order value raised in January 2023 across 1,465 departments.

Genesis will shortly be rolled out to NHS Borders with work to be completed in all 15 local health boards by 31 March 2023. *Figures correct at 31 January 2023.
